The First Three Pieces to Buy

If you could only buy three things this autumn, buy these.

Most men who want to dress better start in the wrong place. They buy the interesting thing first: the patterned shirt, the statement trainer, the jacket they saw on someone else. Then it sits in the wardrobe, because nothing they already own goes with it.

Start the other way round. Buy the pieces that make everything else work. Three is enough to change how most of your week looks.

How I chose them

Each piece had to pass three tests.

  • It goes with almost everything. Navy, white and grey sit with jeans, chinos, grey trousers and most of what is already in your wardrobe.

  • You'll wear it at least twice a week. If it only works for one occasion, it's not a first buy.

  • It still looks right in five years. No trend cuts, no logos.

1. A navy merino crew

This is the hardest-working thing a man can own. Over a T-shirt at the weekend, over an Oxford shirt in the week, under a jacket when it gets cold.

Merino rather than cotton or lambswool, because it is thin enough to layer and doesn't go bobbly as fast as cheap wool. Buy it fitted at the shoulder with a little room through the body. If it clings, go up a size.

2. White leather trainers

The shoe you'll reach for most days. Plain sides, a low sole, no big branding. Leather rather than canvas, because it looks smart enough with stone trousers and still works with jeans.

Don't worry about keeping them perfect. They look better with a few months on them.

3. A navy quilted jacket

This is the one to spend on. A good quilted jacket goes over a knit on a Saturday, over a shirt to the office and even over a suit. It is light enough for October and, with a jumper underneath, warm enough for most of a British winter.

The cheap versions are where you see the difference: shiny fabric, thin cord collar, stitching that pulls. A proper one lasts ten years and looks better for it.

How they work together

  • Weekend: navy knit, jeans, white trainers. Jacket on top if it's cold.

  • Office: light blue shirt, navy knit, grey or stone trousers, jacket.

  • Dinner: navy knit, dark jeans, brown loafers or the white trainers if it's casual. Jacket over your arm.

Three pieces, and most of your week is sorted.

Where to buy

The first three

Two everyday pieces bought well, and one worth spending on.

Amazon prices and stock move, so check the size and seller before you buy.

Final note

You don't need a new wardrobe. You need three things that go with the one you have. Buy these first, wear them hard, and only add more when you notice a real gap.
