Old money style is simple: a few well-made classics, worn often, with nothing to prove. Here are the five pieces that do most of the work.
Most people think old money style means vintage. A grandfather's tweed, a watch passed down, a jumper with holes in the elbows. It doesn't. It means a fit and a material that won't date.
The best example in my own wardrobe is a good wool coat. It isn't vintage. It's just well made, in a cloth that lasts.
The part I'd skip is "old money everything": the jumper over the shoulders, the loafers, the signet ring, all at once. That's a costume. I'd rather keep the base classic, mix in a few newer pieces, and wear it a little loose. That's sprezzatura: you clearly care, but it doesn't show.
The rules, in short
Fit over age. A new piece that fits beats an old one that doesn't. Get trousers hemmed and sleeves checked.
Materials that last. Wool, cotton, leather, suede, waxed cotton. They look better with wear. Most synthetics look worse.
Nothing loud. No big logos. If someone notices the quality, it's because they looked closely.
Where to mix in something new
Keep the base classic: the Oxford, the chinos, the navy knit. Then change one thing. Clean white trainers instead of the loafers. A relaxed overshirt instead of the jacket. One newer piece keeps it yours and stops it looking like a costume.
How to wear the five pieces
Weekend: Oxford open over a white tee, stone chinos, white trainers.
Office: Oxford buttoned, navy knit over it with the collar out, stone chinos, suede loafers.
Cold day: the same, with the waxed jacket on top.
